Well, I'm working full-time at a company, McKissock, here in my home town! Whooooo!!!! I've been hired on as their in-house illustrator/animator/designer/art guy and so far I'm lovin it! This is a bit of an older project that I thought I'd touch up. I was given some good foundational advice that would help in creating a sense of depth, and I wanted to see it work. I've got a couple other pieces I wouldn't mind editing as well, so we'll see if that can happen soon. Last two weeks of class...Woooo-Hooo!

Here are some designs for an illustration I did for an old murder mystery. It was a really great assignment! We were given the mystery, but not the answer. Using whatever clues we could discover in the text we had to figure out who the killer was, his motive and method. Naturally I hit hit the nail on the head...it was Doctor Ionescu, with a jagged knife. What a rotten old meanie.

Another cool thing about the project: the story was set in Romania, one of the few countries I've been to outside of the U.S. It was great doing research, lookin at old photos.

This is a character design for an old Chinese poem I'm illustrating. I found a book with whole bunches of armor designs from all the different Chinese dynasties, which proved to be very helpful reference.

I threw down a quick color study in my moleskin, which is probably the most amazing fun I've had in my sketchbook in a long time! This is only about an inch by two inches using acrylic and colored pencil, a quick technique I was taught that I know I'll continue using. Hope you like!'

I didn't realize it'd been so long since my last post! sorry to the three of you who visit. So far I haven't really posted much "finished" work...mostly sketches and what-not...so here are some illustrations I've done since my time at RMCAD.

This guy's my most recent illustration, finished just the other day on my laptop. For my Illustrating Literature class we were assigned the story The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry. Great story and a lot of fun to visualize. This is what I suppose the cover might look like. I would encourage you to read the story! It would be nice to hear some feedback on whether you feel it works for the story or not...and it's just a good read anyway. I'm finding I really, really like narrative illustration.

This next one was done for my conceptual illustration class. The article talked about how the cells that make up our bodies are outnumbered by the bacteria living inside us. So here is my human apartment building, my first illustration fully realized in Photoshop. Wheeeee!

And finally an ink drawing I did in my first semester for my Intro to Illustration class. We were simply asked to portray an animal of our choice doing a some human activity. For some reason I liked the idea of a croc as a detective of some sort. He kinda reminds me of Sam from the Spawn comics I read growing up.

This piece was done for an assignment in my basic photoshop class. Basically, we were to pick an artist whose style we admire and try to emulate it utilizing the tools we're learning in the class. In this style we were to design a character and create a landscape in which this character's story could be told. I chose Pascal Campion for his simple means of telling an entertaining story with emotive and likable characters. This is Joe. If you asked him he'd tell you there's nothin better than getting your hands greasy under the hood of an automobile. Brings a smile to his face, it does.

i always love cafe drawing, though i haven't taken as much time to do it this semester as i'd like (and need!). but i did manage to find time this week to whip out a few drawings of some of the students eating in the school cafe. enjoy!

Fun with Conte

Alright, some kinda-new drawings. These first two were done the last day of lifedrawring class...i felt it appropriate to end the semester with a bit of fun so i attempted some caricatures. The first, i felt, was nice but wasn't pushed as far as it could have been, so i really went for it on my second go and played with big basic shapes. The second one actually looks more like the model...unfortunately the only factor that suggests they are the same person is the rad facial hair. Fumanchu...go!

This last picture was our final project. We were supposed to combine the anatomy of two different animals with human anatomy. Based on the examples our teacher showed in class and the discussions i heard around the room i realized making 'scary' and sci-fi creatures was sort of the general direction everyone was going to take. Sooo, i decided to go cute and cuddly. i live with two little daschund weiner dogs so i figured i had that going for me as far as research goes. Meet my human/weiner dog/elephant....my humaweinerphant. or something.

oh, all of these were done with Conte on 18 x 24 newsprint. fun stuff.

Dr. Livingstone, I Presume?

Let's see here...this first drawing was done for my friend Rebekah Hiskey, who is heading out to Montana to attend Youth With A Mission. The drawing is of David Livingstone, a missionary who lived a pretty radical life in Africa. I enjoyed stylizing him because he seemed a bit rough around the edges, though i was a little kind in cleaning him up a bit. This was really my first swing at any sort of typography in a drawing, I like the 'S' but my cursive is a bit lacking. I hope you like it Bekah!

This next one is a memory sketch of a kid i saw waiting in line at the mall. I seriously didn't caricature him enough...his jacket was this huge, puffy, neon green thing. His hair was straight as an arrow and hung all over the place. His pants hung down around his thighs...no exaggeration, his butt cheeks were literally hanging out of the back of his pants. All the way. And it looked like he was wearing a couple of those bright orange life preservers on his feet. I could have exaggerated this one way more, but it was fun to draw anyway.
